Terms of Service

The rules for splitting fairly.

Last updated: June 21, 2026

What Cleo is

Cleo helps a group split a receipt or trip and keep a shared ledger of who owes what. Cleo is a ledger, not a payment processor, a bank, or a money transmitter.

Bill-splitting accuracy and liability

Receipt scanning and split calculations are produced with the help of automated tools and may contain errors. Organizers and recipients are responsible for reviewing item assignments, totals, and amounts owed before paying or marking a split as settled. Cleo is not liable for disputes between organizers and recipients, miscalculated splits, or amounts paid based on an inaccurate split.

Payments are between you and your payment provider

Cleo does not move money, hold funds, or process payments. Pay links may open or reference third-party services such as Venmo, Cash App, or Zelle. Any payment you send is a transaction between you and that third-party provider and is governed by that provider’s own terms. Cleo is not responsible for failed, delayed, duplicate, or fraudulent payments made through those services, and cannot reverse or refund a payment on your behalf.

Accounts and access

Organizers create an account to manage splits and trips. Recipients can claim items and view pay links by verifying their phone number with a one-time code, without creating an account. You are responsible for keeping access to your phone number secure, since it is used to verify your identity for claims and payments.

Data usage

Cleo processes receipt images, receipt text, item and split details, phone numbers, claim activity, and payment status to operate the service, as described in our Privacy Policy. By using Cleo you consent to that processing, including the use of automated tools to scan receipts and the sending of SMS messages related to your splits.

Acceptable use

Do not use Cleo to submit fraudulent receipts or splits, to harass or impersonate others, to send unsolicited messages through the service, or to attempt to access another user’s split data without authorization.

Service availability

Cleo is provided on an as-is, as-available basis. Features, including receipt scanning and SMS delivery, depend on third-party providers and may be interrupted, delayed, or changed without notice.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Cleo and its operators are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service, including losses related to inaccurate splits or third-party payment transactions.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as Cleo evolves. Continued use of Cleo after an update means you accept the revised terms.
